Membership Application Guidelines
This form is for individuals seeking admission as a Member of the Pacific Academy of Sciences (PAS). Membership is open to those who demonstrate the competence to undertake independent research in or for the Pacific, and/or those who have provided sustained service to science, technology, the humanities, or Pacific traditional knowledge.

Applicants may be eligible through one or more pathways:
Admission Criteria
Member Criteria
To be admitted as a Member, the applicant must:
- Have the necessary skills and experience to undertake independent research; and/or
- Have rendered sustained service to science, technology, the humanities, or Pacific traditional knowledge in or for the Pacific Islands.
Demonstrating Research Competence
Competence may be demonstrated by (but not limited to) one of several pathways:
- PhD qualification or equivalent, plus subsequent independent research activity; or
- Master's qualification or equivalent, plus demonstrated independent research activity (normally three peer reviewed publications drawn from the subsequent research); or
- Bachelor's degree plus demonstrated independent research activity (normally five peer reviewed publications drawn from the subsequent research); or
- Other forms of evidence that demonstrate research independence, subject to the satisfaction of the Committee.
Demonstrating Sustained Service
Sustained service may be demonstrated by meeting some or all of the following:
- A sustained period of activity in a voluntary role in the non-profit sector in promoting or advancing science, technology, the humanities or traditional Pacific Knowledge
- A personally directed programme of activity in science, technology or the humanities leading to outcomes that benefit the Pacific Islands
- A sustained period of activity, going beyond the norm for the person's employment role, and leading to outcomes that benefit the Pacific Islands
- A sustained period of meritorious activity in the service of the Academy.
What You'll Provide
To complete your application, you will be asked to:
- Provide personal and referee details
- Submit a CV and supporting evidence demonstrating research independence and/or sustained service
- Indicate whether you wish to be considered for Emerging Researcher status
- Make the required declarations regarding PAS governance documents and subscription obligations
All applications are assessed by the PAS Membership Committee, which may seek additional advice as needed. The Committee reserves the right to decline admission to any applicant it considers not a fit and proper person for membership.
