The Academy
The Pacific Academy of Sciences represents a historic milestone in regional scholarly collaboration. Established in 2024, we unite distinguished researchers, indigenous knowledge holders, and emerging scholars from across the Pacific region to address our most pressing challenges through evidence-based research and collective wisdom.
Our Academy serves as the definitive platform for Pacific Island scholars to support local and regional scientific practice, increase the visibility and influence of Pacific Sciences and scholarship, and amplify Pacific indigenous voices in global spaces.
Our Story
The Pacific Academy of Sciences emerged from a collective vision shared by over 60 Pacific scholars, scientists, researchers, academics, industry consultants, tertiary students, and teachers who gathered in Apia, Samoa in October 2023. All recognised the pressing need to raise the 'voice of science' in the Pacific region, for the benefit of Pacific peoples, as well as the global community.
Officially launched on 23 October 2024 at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, the Academy stands as testament to Pacific determination and intellectual sovereignty. Our establishment marks the first time Pacific Island nations have created a regional mechanism to collectively harness their knowledge for evidence-based decision-making.
